St Luke’s Hospice supporter scoops 19 prizes in 19 years
Winsford resident Dave Southern has been playing the St Luke’s Hospice lottery since they held their very first draw back in 1994 and has since scooped 19 prizes over 19 years – a prize for each year the charity lottery has been picking winners.
The Hospice in Winsford is now celebrating its 25th anniversary of providing care for people with cancer and Dave is keen to encourage more people to join the fundraising scheme. It’s proved to be a popular money-spinner over the years, having raised more than £7 million towards patient care.
By joining in with the weekly lottery, players are able to donate regularly to the Hospice whilst putting their name in the hat for a chance to win a cash prize of up to £1,500 per draw.
Mr Southern is now chasing down his 20th win and says he will keep playing in order to support the wonderful work of the hospice, which provided respite care to his mother.
He commented: “We are so lucky to have such a local facility. I was so pleasantly surprised when I came to the Hospice, even though I live in Winsford I didn’t realise the extent of their care. The very last thing you think about when you visit St Luke’s is death.”
Mr Southern’s fundraising efforts for the hospice haven’t just stopped at playing the lottery. His family are also regular visitors to the Delamere Street Interiors shop in Winsford where his wife Denise loves to shop in the Indulgence Dress agency. The family have recently had their kitchen refitted and Mr Southern is extremely proud of his new dining set which he chose from the store.
St Luke’s lottery and promotions manager, Claire Langston, recently made a visit to Mr Southern to thank him personally for his ongoing support. She commented: “Without Mr Southern and our loyal lottery players across the community we could not continue the work we do. We are so lucky to have such long term supporters who help us look after so many people.”
