Overnight road closures needed for Watergate Bridge repairs

Final phase of repairs on historic bridge in Chester

Overnight road closures will be needed at Watergate Bridge in Chester to allow contractors to take down the scaffolding that has protected the bridge during its repairs.

A section of New Crane Street, from Nicholas Street to Deva Link, will be closed from Monday 4th December to Wednesday 6th December, between 7pm and 10.30pm.

Then again the following week: from Monday 11th December to Wednesday 13th December, between 7pm and 10.30pm.

Diversion signage will be in place and variable message boards will inform motorists of the closure leading up to the works.

Cheshire West and Chester Council’s cabinet member for environment, Cllr Karen Shore said: “The project is now in its final phase and the scaffolding will be removed to reveal the skilled work of our stonemasons.

“I’m delighted that this important Chester landmark will now be enjoyed by generations to come.”

The amount of work required to restore the historic Watergate Bridge increased significantly after the bridge parapet was dismantled earlier this year.

Repair techniques used in the last century meant that 85% of the stone had to be replaced, initially it was estimated that just 15% of the stonework on the bridge would need to be replaced.
