Christmas messages 2017 - Chris Matheson
Chris Matheson, MP for Chester
2017 has been a turbulent year.
It has been dominated by the lunacy of Brexit and the negotiations are sucking the life of our political and public life.
We had, of course, an unexpected General Election and I was so grateful to the people of Chester for returning me to Westminster again; it really is an honour that I will never take for granted.
But my high point? In July I called on Boris Johnson to get my constituent Ray Tindall home from an unjust prison sentence in Chennai, India.
I said I wanted to have a pint with Ray before Christmas.
So to sit down with Ray in the pub in Chester and chink our pints together at the start of December was the best present possible after a long campaign.
2018 will start for me with a visit to British troops on the Russian border in Estonia, before we get back to the regular life of Chester and Westminster.
I want to get improvements to our road and rail network, and support our businesses to grow locally.
And please, no more snap General Elections!
