Chester Gladiators U8s rugby team are celebrating after kicking off the season in style in a new strip thanks to sponsors Ungerer.

The junior team took on Westhoughton Lions recently in one of their first matches wearing shirts carrying the logo of the Sealand Road based company.

Jim Green from the Chester Gladiators said: “Their kit is the same as the one worn by the first team which is where they all aspire to be one day.

“It’s great for them to look smart and they played very well. Some of the boys have only been playing for eight weeks and have really come on.

“Others have increased hugely in confidence and they are all very excited about the season ahead.”

Rugby fever is gripping Chester, with 27 toddlers turning up at the weekend to take part in tots sessions the Gladiators run for children aged from two upwards.

The junior team has seen a huge rise in numbers and, as well as the U8s, they have U7s and U9s teams too.

Speaking about the decision to sponsor the team, Grahame Hackney, head of Ungerer's flavour division, said: "We feel sport plays a vital role in the community and we have a lot of families here who are interested in Rugby, so we were pleased to offer our support and wish them the best of luck for the rest of the season."

Jim added: “It’s good to see so much interest in rugby and we hope that by starting young we can have some great young players in years to come.

"This is the first time in history Chester has had one, never mind two, rugby leagues at this age playing in the North West Counties League.

"The support Ungerer have given us has made a real difference."
